Thorne Nature Experience
This complex, multi-phase project at the Thorne Nature Center involved both traditional excavation and environmentally sensitive land shaping. We began by clearing and grubbing four acres of land, followed by full-site overlot grading to establish base elevations for buildings, parking, and natural features. Hyperion Excavating completed two separate building foundation excavations with two-foot overexcavations for soil stability, then backfilled and graded for concrete slabs and asphalt paving. A central feature of the project was the permanent retention pond, which we excavated and lined with geotextile and a sand filtration system.
To support the site’s ecological goals, we installed biocomp growing media to turn the pond into a living, bioactive filtration system. Additional scope included an underdrain system for the playground and detailed excavation for a custom-built interactive nature play area. We also constructed a trail connection to nearby open space, blending infrastructure with conservation and education. This project showcases our capacity to deliver technical precision while supporting environmentally focused design.
